2023 Scholarship Winner
Sandra is a second year graduate student at California State Polytechnic University in Humboldt, CA, majoring in marine biology. Her bachelor's degree, also in marine biology, was earned at UC Santa Cruz.
Her current specific studies are geared toward managing the loss of kelp forests along the California coast. With purple sea urchins devastating the kelp forests, she has designed lab experiments and field observations to find urchin predators. Previously sunflower stars filled that role but their numbers, too, have declined.
Divewise, Sandra was NAUI certified as an Open Water Diver in 2021 and then as a Rescue Scuba Diver in 2022.
